This duet version of Minstrel’s Air represents an enhancement of the rhythmic underpinning of the simplified version of the piece (i.e. the original iteration of the piece).
The melodic strength of the piece lies in the counterpoint and interplay between the parts. The bass accompaniment reflects a rhythmic underpinning of the melody, much as drumming would be used in the medieval period. This should be played sotto voce, so as not to overwhelm the intertwining melodic elements above it.
